Top 5 Tips for Making a Photo Session with Kids Easier

If you’re prepping for a photo session with your kiddos, you may be feeling a bit apprehensive or worried they’ll be in a sassy mood that day. Children aren’t always easy to deal with, which is why the below tips will definitely come in handy before your upcoming photo session.

1. Don't make a huge deal out of it. If you're stressed out and cranky, your kids will usually pick up on it and act accordingly. Their behavior will usually be better if you are relaxed and having fun. You may have to make some compromises to keep the peace such as letting your energetic daughter's hair stay straight instead of curling it into because she won't sit still. Focus on the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff. If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the session step back, typically the photographer has dealt with sour patch kiddos and it actually works to just step away and let them have fun together. From personal experience, I will say most of the kiddos I have at sessions love to talk to me one on one without mom listening, so we’ll go off and play and I can get them to interact and get engaged with me to capture those true smiles and giggles.

2. Make it fun. Let the kids have a couple “fun pictures” where they get to pick their own pose or props. You get to keep the more serious photos while they get to keep their silly photos. This way everyone wins.  If you are struggling to get your kids to sit still, turn the photo session into a game. Simon Says usually works like a charm. Or, give it the old “throw grass at me” and usually they willingly oblige.

3. Be prepared.  If you're going to be out for several hours, ensure that your children are well rested and have had their nap. Bringing some snacks and activities along is also a great idea. If you happen to be shooting in a remote location, you never know when you might need something like bug spray, tissues or a first aid kit so bring that along too. I personally have emergency kits of things but it never fails I forget to grab extra water bottles, make sure you’ve got enough for your littles!

4. Be patient. Save your sanity by trying not to control the photo session too much. Sometimes the best photos come from kids just doing their own thing. Work with your photographer and your photos will look fantastic. Remember, you’re paying for a service with someone you trust to capture images you’ve seen in their work. They know what they’re doing, trust the process! ;)

5.  Have a chat. Get your children talking to both you and the photographer about topics such as school or their favorite songs. This allows them to feel more comfortable around your photographer and will also give your photographer a chance to capture a few candid and cute expressions. I try my best to catch up on Disney channel but sometimes I stink at knowing cool things, mention a topic and I’ll take it away with your littles! A go to is always asking what they’ll be for halloween or what the Easter bunny brought them!

And something new I’ve been enjoying is to give you guys a little outfit inspo from sessions. I’ve got some below I’ll link to Amazon if you’re looking for something fun to wear to your future sessions!

Southeast Nebraska Family Photographer // Andelt Family // Family Portrait Session // Crete, Nebraska

SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER | ANDELT FAMILY | FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION | CRETE, NEBRASKA

images of fairbanks family, three generations, from fairbury nebraska, beatrice nebraska, lincoln nebraska and omaha nebraska. photos taken in southeast rural area near wilber nebraska on a gravel road at sunset with family walking towards camera. family is dressed in navy, coral, light blue, cream, white, stripes and blue jeans with sandals. surrounded by tall grass in early spring with short corn and soybeans starting to grow. grandparents are looking at camera while kids looking at parents. photo taken by dirt road photography and photographer is kelsey (homolka) nerud.

When someone mentions the Andelt crew I always just smile and think back to quite a few years ago when I met all the boys and remember how tiny they were and thinking to myself, “gee, Angie sure does her hands full with all those boys.” But then, as I watched them grow, it warmed my heart seeing how much love their family has and how much they adore and take care of their momma. These boys are all hard workers and it feels like such a feat to get them all together and smiling in one picture. I kid you not, they’re so nice to each other when the camera is up but those smiles quickly turn into jokes and jabs once it falls down. We stood there talking and giggling about whose in trouble the most, who is the most athletic and whose the smartest out of the crew but at the end of the day, I’d agree that they’re ALL good kids with hearts full of love for each other who’d be there and have each others backs no matter what.

The Andelts are from the Crete, Nebraska area and like I mentioned, I’ve known them for years. It’s fun meeting up but I rarely get to see all the boys together. I took Zane’s senior pictures a few years ago and this year I was lucky enough to get to know his brother Ames. Oh boy, they’re totally different kids but they’re both so quiet unless you get them on the subject of trap shooting!

For their session we decided to meet at a farm, because of course, they’re farm boys! I knew I’d have better luck and more natural smiles if we did pictures of them in their favorite environment so we just went with it. After the camera got put away we tried pulling apart tall grass (it’s at thing, and it’s tough, trust me!) and just chatted while we watched the sun set on a nice late fall evening in Nebraska. Honestly, it’s my favorite thing and one of the many reason’s I went into photography. Because dusk is my favorite time of day and watching the earth slowly fade into the night and all the animals settle for the evening is just magical.

Southeast Nebraska Family Photographer // Fairbanks Family // Group Generation Family Portrait Session // Wilber, Nebraska

NEBRASKA FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER | FAIRBANKS FAMILY | GROUP GENERATION FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION | WILBER, NEBRASKA

images of fairbanks family, three generations, from fairbury nebraska, beatrice nebraska, lincoln nebraska and omaha nebraska. photos taken in southeast rural area near wilber nebraska on a gravel road at sunset with family walking towards camera. family is dressed in navy, coral, light blue, cream, white, stripes and blue jeans with sandals. surrounded by tall grass in early spring with short corn and soybeans starting to grow. grandparents are looking at camera while kids looking at parents. photo taken by dirt road photography and photographer is kelsey (homolka) nerud.

I haven’t met a family quite as spunky as fun as the Fairbanks crew in quite some time! With the crew living in Fairbury, Beatrice, Lincoln and Omaha I commend them for finding a time that worked for everyone to get together and schedule an evening for pictures. I only have one sister and between our schedules plus our parents it’s quite a feat to get us together for some quick shots ;)

The Fairbanks family session was the most beautiful evening, minimal bugs, a bit windy at first (I’m blaming the girls for that one) otherwise the sun was warm and the littles were in a great mood. It’s basically what us photographers call a dream session! ;)

The whole crew met me near Wilber and we went to one of my farm locations near the Turkey Creek river bottom ground that we farm and we hung out and captured some pretty epic pictures. We started with all the formal “pretty” pictures that mom’s and grandma’s want. I always recommend we get those out of the way in the chance we lose interest of the kiddos and smiles aren’t cool anymore. Those we absolutely flew through, everyone smiled on command and we even got a few giggles out of grandma.

Once all the formals were over, we got busy having fun. The kids were my personal golf ball hunters and we went out in search of some around the yard. We did find some in the mud and I promised once we got through more of the session we could continue to search for more because let’s be honest, that was truly the highlight of the entire session for the kids. Way more fun than giggles and tickles with your mommies.

The kiddos took a break from searching just long enough for us to squeeze in a few shots by the grain bins and then posed for some pictures by the barn again with the whole family. I love doing generation family sessions because it’s so neat to see grandparents interact with their grandkids as well as siblings and in-laws getting together to laugh and give each other lots of jokes. This family made me feel so welcomed in and I secretly thought their Christmas get-togethers were probably something I’ve been missing out on my entire life, I knew I’d totally fit in with them ;)

We then zipped over to a gravel road right at sunset because the lighting was stunning and sunsets with gravel or dirt roads are of course my favorites!! We ran up and down that road, danced and spinned in circles. We had races, we collected rocks in our pockets, it truly is my favorite part of my sessions is just interacting and getting those little engaged and having a good time. Then, at the end of the session, after promise after promise of “last picture” we ended with a surprise gift of the kids each earning their own golf ball since we couldn’t find the others we were hunting for earlier. Their little eyes lit up and they all took off proudly with their favorite souvenir of the entire week. I love the simplicity of life as a little!!

Some of their outfit inspo I did round up and include links for just in case you’d like to get something similar for your own family sessions! I went a little more with rich warm tones but the links are all from Amazon so make sure to click around, there’s plenty of colors in each style!

Huge thank you to the Fairbanks family. You guys are such amazing people and have the most beautiful family. Wishing you many many years of health and laughter. Don’t stop searching for those hidden golf balls ;)

High School Senior Photos // Autumn Branson // Fairbury High School // Fairbury Nebraska Photographer

NEBRASKA senior PHOTOGRAPHER | autumn branson | Fairbury High School | high school senior PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION | fairbury, NEBRASKA

images of high school girl senior photos named autumn branson of fairbury nebraska who went to fairbury high school in nebraska and is part of the class of 2019. photos were taken near dorchester nebraska in saline county. photo includes creek with girl in flowly floral dress with short hair and glasses. another outfit includes jeans with tennis shoes and button up gray shirt with white dog and sunset on a dirt or gravel road. tall grass with a sunset behind as well. photographer is kelsey homolka nerud of wilber nebraska who specializes in high school senior photography and senior pictures.

Autumn Branson of Fairbury, Nebraska

Autumn Branson is a senior from Fairbury High School who is ambitious, always smiling, and full of determination. She came to me with ideas of wanting to do some pretty fun things during her senior session and my heart sang with joy knowing we’d nail all her epic plans. We wanted to include her precious little fluff ball of a puppy, that she shows in AKC dog shows, so of course that was an absolute must!! She also said she saw and fell in love with my water and river shots so that was top on our list to start with. And of course, we always have to include a barn or two and some dirt roads in the photos. ;)

The first thing we did for her senior session is put on our muck boots and ventured into the woods to go visit my hidden gem of a little natural spring and take some pretty pictures down there. She was a beautiful floral dress that fit the outdoor location perfectly! The dress was flowly and the colors were stunning with all of the fall leaves that were falling down around us. It was seriously magical, something I always love to stop and just enjoy the moment of when I’m taking photos of seniors during the busy fall season.

I like to get to know my seniors and one of the things Autumn mentioned was that she’s a wrestler for her local high school team. I found that to be pretty unique and special, I also thought it was a creative touch to bring her wrestling shoes and a trophy she had won as well. Another thing I always do is ask the senior what is one word that describes you, her answer was reserved. I totally see it, but I also think the word I’d use to describe her is aspiring. ;)

Thank you again Branson crew for visiting our farm near Dorchester, Nebraska. It’s been a joy working with you and I love the album you choose to order. I think it will look fantastic! I’m sending you the best of wishes in college and cannot wait to see how your future unfolds!

High School Senior Session // Tara Schroeder // Fairbury High School // Southeast Nebraska Photographer

When Tara Schroeder contacted me planning out her senior session I knew we would create something magical. Little did I know, she’d invite me down to Fairbury, Nebaska and we’d have so much fun and she’d show me so many unique and beautiful locations! From totally urban buildings, to pretty brick alleys and even the Fairbury High School football stadium. All of it was so pretty and a fantastic change up for me so I wasn’t shooting my same old farm looks.

Tara is a senior at Fairbury High School and is active in softball and cheerleading. When I asked her what she does for fun she said her and her friends enjoy hanging out down at the river, going shopping and spending time around bonfires. I love that she enjoys the country life and also likes horses so that’s always an easy way for me to connect with my seniors. I found it hilarious when I asked what is one thing that people might not know about you and she said she doesn’t like cats. Girlfriend, so much me too (allergies can do that to ya)! Thanks again for trusting me to capture your most precious high school memories of your senior year. I cannot wait to meet the rest of your family here shortly for your family session!

Senior Session // Madison Gregory // Fairbury High School // Southeast Nebraska Photographer

Meeting Maddy was so fun. She's been working so hard that she's graduating early from Fairbury High School. What a determined person, that's just so cool to see teens work so hard towards those types of things.

Madison is also a cheerleader and loves dancing, cheer and fitness. Finding a girl that is so like me was so great, but unlike her, I don't have that beautiful hair color that I've always secretly wished for! I love asking my seniors some questions and one that I asked her was what is one thing people wouldn't know about you and her response is that she's extremely motivated. I too, love staying motivated and once I put my mind to it, can accomplish anything. I have no doubt that Maddy will accomplish so many things in her future, she's an awesome person!
