Colt Lee

Western, Nebraska

I absolutely LOVE getting to see babies and toddlers once in awhile during the cold months when we’re all cooped up inside impatiently awaiting the spring weather. Every January I host milestone mini sessions that are simplistic and focused on babies. The set-up is super basic and we invite clients to “shop” our wardrobe or baby outfits or bring their own. We even wrote up a post about The Best Of Amazon for Milestone Outfits to give clients inspiration!

One of my favorite little nuggets that stopped in was Mister Colt. I personally couldn’t wait to see him because my cousin’s (hey there Dustin & Amelia!) couldn’t make it to Christmas because Colt wasn’t feeling the best so it had been quite awhile since I’d seen him. Oh. My. Goodness. He has gotten so big and his laid back personality truly shined through! He was just all smiles and ready to talk to us from the minute he walked in the door.

At milestone sessions I try to go as simple as possible. The less time we spend setting up and taking down backdrops, the more time we get to spend playing with babies!! With these mini’s it was a basic, cream backdrop of seamless paper and we tossed in a few tiny props like the fur rug and box to help him sit up.

Colt did great and although he wasn’t quite sitting unassisted I’m willing to bet now he is! that’s why we’ve got plenty of buckets and basket’s to sit babies in. They always love getting to sit up and look around at us while we’re shooting.

Thank you Colt (and mommy and daddy) for visiting me. I cannot wait to watch you grow and see your personality change. You are such a handsome little dude and I have no doubt you’ll grow into loving the outdoors just like your daddy!!

Wilber-Clatonia High School - Friend High School - Tri-County High School

We did our first official shoot with our Senior Rep Team of 2019 and I can say it was hands down something that inspired me to kick off the Class of 2020 already! These girls brought laughter and spunk to their session and it reminded me why I truly love what I do. Seniors have been, and always will be my favorite type of sessions. And, kicking off the rep team with this amazing group of girls I know will only get me more excited to meet high school seniors from all over Nebraska!

Our reps are from several schools located around the southeast Nebraska area. Janae is representing Milford High School, Cassidy represents Tri-County High School, Morgan represents Norris High School, for our Wilber-Clatonia High School reps we have Shelby, Lily, and Jackie (we love WCHS!) and rounding us out is Caitlin who goes to Friend High School. This crew is so excited for their senior year and after our meeting at Brew House in Crete, Nebraska (my fav coffee place of all time!) we stepped out to go shoot a quick mini session in the snow. The girls all wore the cutest outfits that coordinated perfectly and I loved watching each of their personalities shine through their clothing choices. From worn denim jeans to black denim with distressed holes, we had some cute outfits paired with warm fuzzy boots and then Miss Shelby and Lily lived on the edge in tennis shoes although I swear they were going to get frost bite. I love that the girls almost all showed up in vests (myself included) because it clearly means we all love a puffy vest!! And of course, we almost all had matching CC beanies which cracked us up because we loved the thought of thinking alike!

While out in the snow shooting pictures of the girls, we learned so much about each other and laughed at some pretty wonky things. From Cassidy’s hilarious “laugh” to me almost falling before we even left the road, I’d say the girls had fun. The snow photos look amazing and the girls rocked their photo shoot! Here in Nebraska we received about seven inches of snow over the past few days so this was the perfect opportunity to take these pictures. We met in Crete, Nebraska for the session and then had snowball fights and tried not to slide down any slippery hills. The girls toughed it out and were troopers when I asked them to dip their fingers into the snow and some even offered to toss snow into each others faces “just for the perfect pictures.” But, I think my favorite part of the day was watching them laugh and get to know each other! My whole intention of having a rep team is to find ways to bridge schools and bring girls together to empower and encourage each other.

My heart exploded when they asked if we could get together more often than just for shoots. Yes girls, absolutely we can do girls days and go get pedis or nails done then go grab pizza and gab and catch up. Yes, absolutely my house is a safe place for pizza and movie nights! Honestly, this is what I dreamed of when I said I wanted to start a rep program and I am still on cloud nine thinking that something like a photo session could bring together such a diverse group of girls and teach them to love each other and laugh. This is totally what I imagined my business doing, and I’m grateful I can be the bridge to connect these girls! XOXO

Coltin Rezabek // Wilber-Clatonia High School

Coltin Rezabek is known all over the state of Nebraska for his fantastic high school football career and even owns a few titles for Player Of The Year so I cannot wait to brag about the senior pictures we took during his session this summer and fall!

Coltin goes to Wilber-Clatonia High School located in a small town located in Southeast Nebraska called Wilber. He’s active in FFA as well as involved in sports like baseball, football, basketball and track. I’ve watched him bring home a few championship titles with his Legion Baseball team and many other sports teams he’s been a part of. He truly is an amazing kid!!

What I like most about Coltin while getting to know him is that he mentioned he loves to hunt and fish and I know his family spends a lot of time together out on the lake fishing. It’s always my favorite to see families find a hobby or activity to do together and fishing is one that I can totally connect with as I did fishing often with my dad growing up!

Quickbooks - Client Invoicing, Vendor Business Expense Tracking & More for Keeping Photographers Organized

Quickbooks for Client Invoicing, Vendor Business Expense Tracking & More for Keeping Photographers Organized

Shootproof-Gallery-Hosting-Client-Contracts-Invoicing-Mobile-Apps-Review-Kelsey-Homolka-Nerud-Dirt-Road-Photography-Referral

We’re on a mission to help photographers get organized in 2019 and one of the most important things in a business is to know your numbers, have a tracking system to keep clients invoices organized and a place to enter business expenses and sales tax information.

Insert Quickbooks for the win!

Yes, we love Quickbooks and cannot wait to dive into it!! We hope something we’ve mentioned will resonate and you’ll find Quickbooks or another accounting software to help get you organized and ready to launch into your business for 2019.

So what exactly is Quickbooks? Well, Quickbooks is an accounting software program that helps keep you organized and puts everything in one place. I personally use the Quickbooks Desktop version and love it but I also have heard many great things about the online monthly subscriptions as well. For me, I love the one time investment instead of having to be locked into paying monthly. After talking to my accountant, he said, in reality, my desktop would be a better investment since I don’t need to update yearly because I don’t do payroll. So for me, it’s about $200 to purchase the desktop version, divide that by five year (I purchase the newest version every five years) and that’s about $40/year I’m spending for the program. The cheapest online subscription version is $10/month so basically, you’re saving a lot by just purchasing the desktop version. ;)

Client Invoicing

As a photographer, one of the major things we do in our business is send invoices to our clients. I’ve already gone over how I utilize Shootproof in a previous post and that’s what I use for my actual invoicing but I also use Quickbooks to keep track of my overall accounting for my business. So, I create my invoices in quickbooks and that’s the official place I keep track. If clients pay with cash or a check, it gets recorded here and nothing is created in Shootproof. If they want to pay with a credit card or set up payments, we then create a duplicate of the exact same invoice in Shootproof and then they do those payments there. Once payments are made, it gets entered in Quickbooks. But my favorite reason for using Quickbooks for my clients is because I can look up their past order history. Sometimes I’ll have a client come back the next year wanting to order Christmas cards and can’t remember how many they ordered the year before, I just check out their past invoices. Or, maybe they booked a high school senior session with me, well, I can look up exactly what we ordered for their older sibling and see what we had extras of and adjust their new invoices accordingly. It seriously is amazing.

Line Items (Products & Session Fees)

I’m not going to lie, setting up Quickbooks is overwhelming. My biggest suggestion when setting it up is trial and error. You really have to ask your specific accountant for help as tax information can make a difference but for me, I took the time to enter every single item I sell as products for clients along with each session type that I have. Yes it takes forever, yes it sucks, but long term, it’s the best time I’ve spent! When making up lists of your items I’ve found it helpful to get specific. Check out the image below. I created a main category for my sessions (as a service). From there I entered my session fees and put the pricing along with any description I wanted for the invoices to auto populate. Then, I created another category with my Print Packages (towards the bottom) and enter a sub-category for my Create Your Own Collections and then etc from there. Then, my other sub categories for the rest of my product based on types and sizes. Again, I know it’s time consuming. BUT once it’s done, all you have to do is drop them into your invoices. Easy. Peasy.

Referrals & Credits

Another thing I’ve learned to create and utilize is the credits section. I offer referral credits to my clients who refer friends and sometimes, it’s tough to keep track of who has earned what. So, I created a line item and just go to create a credit and apply it to their account. I send an email to them thanking them and then it’s sitting in their account for when they’re ready to use it. I also give a credit to the person who gets referred, so in the description I’ll typically write who referred them and that’s it. Then, I apply that credit to their invoices. Simple, and easy to track. My kinda program ;)

Vendor expenses

Here’s here Quickbooks gets magical. You know all those pesky expenses that come with running a business? All those receipts floating around your office and wallet? QUICKBOOKS ORGANIZES THEM!! That’s right. All you have to do is enter them and bam, records all nicely organized and ready for your accountant. I do mine a little different but the system works for me. I have a folder on my desk, I put all my incoming bills/print invoices/receipts into it. (Disclaimer, most of my bills are set up as autopay, so when I get the paper copies, they’re already paid). At the end of the month I sit down and “enter bills” into QB. Then, you select the magic button “pay bills” and you can actually mark them all paid all at once! It’s magical friends. Seriously the most magical part of the entire accounting system. There is just way too much info to go into details in this section so I’m keeping it short and sweet for now.

Nebraska-High-School-Senior-Family-Photographer-Kelsey-Nerud-quickbooks-for-photographers-4.jpg

travel & Mileage

Again, as a photographer, we often are driving to locations or dropping off orders for our clients. QBs has a section dedicated to entering in mileage which is super helpful when my accountant asks! No more guess work or back tracking to see where I went or who I met with. You can set up exact mileage pricing as well in there. So many great things!!

Tax information

Ok this is another favorite part. Quite often I see people asking for tax advice on how to stay organized and reporting of sales tax. News flash. QB can do it for you (kinda). If you have it set-up, Quickbooks can auto populate which line items are needing to be taxed. From there, it’ll show tax collected and then show a summary of what taxes are owed to whom. This is so tough to get into details because you really need to ask your local accountant but for me, this was my biggest selling reason to purchase QB. I like looking at a glance to see how much I owe. I personally have a separate bank account set-up and after each session/order I transfer $XX amount into that account to hold back for taxes. That’s a whole separate subject for a different day but for now, just make sure you’re pulling aside that sales tax and tax income amount so you’re not scrambling at the end of the year to pull it together. Technically, the sales tax isn’t yours anyways ;)

Snapshots & business reports

Hello I’m Kelsey and I’m a complete nerd about reports and knowing my numbers. This program is fantastic to show me the overall reports about my business. It shows me what’s making money, what’s not doing so well, and even compares numbers to last year. I like setting number attainable goals monthly and I love snapshots because it shows me graphs and charts along with comparing it to last years monthly numbers in sales. It’s a great visual to keep you on track and at the end of the year compare what worked the best throughout the year. I like printing them all out and sitting down to make decisions, if, for example, I have metal prints on my price list and show I sold only five but my canvases I sold forty, maybe it’s time for me to look into removing metal prints from my product line-up and up prices slightly on canvases. These reports can be worth their weight in gold and my account especially loves them because they auto-populate for tax income time!!

I hope all of this information helped you guys out. It took awhile to gather the info and get it all laid out but you really should invest in some type of accounting software. You’ve spent so much money on equipment for your business why not invest in something to keep you organized when if comes to tracking your numbers? You wouldn’t buy educational workshops and then not watch them, so why would you collect income but not monitor where it’s all going?! For more info please feel free to reach out to us, we’d love to help you out! But as always, make sure you consult with your accountant, we truly don’t know your personal business’ and it’s always best to advise with someone who knows yous situation the best.

Best of 2018 // Dirt Road Photography Yearly Review // Rural Southeast Nebraska Photographer

Nebraska-High-School-Senior-Family-Photographer-Kelsey-Nerud-year-in-review.jpg

I swear 2018 flew by. The older I get, the quicker the years seem to go. Sometimes I blink and I cannot believe the month is almost over! It’s now time to start thinking about 2019 and I love to take a few days to reflect on my business as well as look into the future to set goals and aspire to reach milestones I once just dreamed of.

I hope this past year has brought you joy and happiness as well as many new stories to look back on and reminisce over the good times you’ve had. I know so many things have changed in our family. My sister and her husband welcomed their sweet baby girl Timber and she’s going to be celebrating her first birthday soon. My little niece is the greatest gift of 2018 and I adore getting to spend time with her. My parents are still busy with working and hobbies. Mom’s garden was actually scaled back her giant garden to only sized enough to feed a small village instead of a city. Dad’s still collecting accordions and playing polkas with his friends. I always enjoy spending time waltzing around the dance floor to his talented songs.

As for me, well, I’ve stayed on my toes this past year! I traveled to Oregon for a High School Senior Workshop with the fabulous Holli True where I was honored to meet her and other amazing photographers from all over the country. I also spent my entire spring and summer testing the waters with a Senior Rep Team and I loved it so much I’ve launched a whole new program for the Class of 2019! We also shot almost 100 sessions again this year, so that for sure kept us on our toes shooting and editing!!! There are so many other changes happening soon that I have no doubt that 2019 will be an exciting chapter to write and bring you many new fun things to look forward to.

Here at Dirt Road Photography we’re working on adding more high end exclusive products as well as new services to the business lineup. While we absolutely love the vendors we work with, we’re looking at finding more heirloom products and will release those details here soon. What I love most is all of the compliments I've received from people who love getting their images printed and displayed in their homes. They love that they now have lasting memories they can pass down through future generations and flip through on a daily basis. Future generations won’t have any tangible prints to hold and enjoy unless we become proactive and print what we’ve taken pictures of. Let’s not be the generation without photos!!

This last year has had so many changes and improvements so I wanted to take the time to reach out and let each and every 2018 client and supporter of DRP to know that I am grateful for your business and encouragement. You’re not supporting a big company but you’re helping to support a local small business owner. Without you, owning a business would be impossible!

I hope to see many of you again in 2019 and I love watching you and your family continue to grow. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for inviting me into your family’s lives. You’re all such a blessing and I love knowing each and every one of you. I truly do value each friendship I’ve made! I wish you a great new year and cannot wait to see what successful things you accomplish in 2019.

With our Milestone Mini Session’s coming up we wanted to kick out a quick review of some fun Amazon links for you guys to check out and order if you’re needing something cute for your littles for pictures. These links are perfect for us small town Nebraska people who don’t have access to bigger stores with stylish outfits that don’t include characters on them. I have a very specific style that I personally love to I tried to tailor to those types of outfits but of course you can cruise around and find similar things you might like through the links. This is a great stress free way to find some fun outfits and spend less since we tried to include some basics that you might have something similar to layer into these outfits.

Sitter Girl Outfit Ideas

Nebraska-High-School-Senior-Family-Photographer-Kelsey-Nerud-best-of-amazon-senior-photos-wardrobe-outfits-4.jpg

One / Ruffle Top & Floral Skit / $12.99 |  Two / Pink Ruffled Romper / $11.18 |  Three / Ruffle Sleeve Romper / $10.98 |  Four / Hoodie & Floral Pants / $14.69 |  Five / Ruffled Sleeveless Romper / $11.66 |  Six / Floral Long Sleeved Bodysuit / $9.98 |  Seven / Ruffle Top & Floral Pants / $14.99

We wanted to go with muted tones so that babies really stand out and these colors give them creamy skin tones which is what we all love so much. These colors will look beautiful with the cream color backdrop and fluffy cream colored rugs that we have. We also tried to pick some extremely reasonably priced options, nothing over $15! Bonus, these would double for family pictures too ;)

Sitter Boy Outfits Ideas

Nebraska-High-School-Senior-Family-Photographer-Kelsey-Nerud-best-of-amazon-senior-photos-wardrobe-outfits-5.jpg

One / Romper Hoodie & Pants / $10.78 |  Two / Long Sleeve Striped Shirt & Pants / $8.98 |  Three / Striped Maroon Hoodie & Pants / $11.99 |  Four / Maroon Hooded Romper / $11.99 |  Five / Gray Hoodie & Striped Pants / $13.99 |  Six / Tan Sleeveless Romper / $10.99 |  Seven / Green Long Sleeve Romper / $12.98

Boys are tougher when it comes to different styles. There are a lot of the outfits I found that had graphics on the shirts and I’m totally not into that so I decided not to share any. Also, I felt that the button up collared shirts with suspenders felt too “fancy” for photos and prefer the more relaxed feel so I didn’t share any of those either. I realize stripes were a pretty consistent pattern with what I posted but they’re just cute and fun! Also, hoodies, there are so many adorable hoodie options on Amazon!!

Best Of Amazon Baby Outfits

So there’s some great outfits to choose from for you guys! I hope this round up helps and you find something useful through those links, if you don’t purchase them for a photo session, you still might just purchase them to dress your babies super cute in! The prices are pretty reasonable and they’re all something I would personally recommend. Also, did you know what we offer product credits to clients?! That’s right! If you’re interested in offering to add it to our client closet let us know, we sometimes are willing to purchase them from you and will give you product credit, great way for you to get fun photo gifts and for us to build our closet to help other babies look fashionable!

I wish I could put into words how much I absolutely love and adore this family. This was an extra special session for me because I got to hang out with this sweet and sassy little nugget, miss Timber Rose, my niece! I am so grateful for this family, they’ve been there through everything with me and we’ve created some pretty fun memories out on my parents farm near Wilber, Nebraska. From cruising the country side on four wheelers to having family night and playing croquet until the sun sets over the barn, we’ve made lots of memories!! For those, I’m forever grateful that I’m surrounded with those who love me and trust me with taking their photos.

Chrissy and Aaron got married this past year and I was so over the moon about it. Aaron farms near Wilber and my sister works in town for the county. Timber entered our lives January 1st and has been the highlight of our family ever since. She’s full of smiles, sass and attitude but she’s also a sweetheart that can light up any room with just a simple quick grin.

I love that they wore matching cute plaid scarves with orange colors for their session. The pop of color combined with their fun black shirts was amazing with the background of brown trees and green grass. We choose a farm that has beautiful sun shining through the trees and grass that was shorter so Timber could sit in it. The fall weather was great that evening so that of course added to the family session we had planned. Timber was happy once she got warmed up to the location and even hung out and giggled at us making faces at her while she sat with her little fall pumpkins. I love that her favorite thing is when mommy or daddy whisper silly words to her. I’m so grateful to be a photographer who gets to use my skills and talent to take pictures for my own family. This hands down is my favorite thing and getting to combine my passion along with my family, well, that’s the perfect combo!! Thank you again so much Niederklein crew for trust me, it means the world and I’m so proud of you three!

Pay It Forward - Operation Community Over Competition (House Of Flynn Surprise Gift)

NEBRASKA Senior portrait PHOTOGRAPHER | pay it forward | house of flynn bag | beatrice, NEBRASKA

SURPRISE!! Today I surprised Kristen from K.Jensen Photography. It was so worth it!! ;)

I did a thing. This wasn't a thing motivated to promote myself or my business. This was a feel good in my soul thing. This was a random act of kindness but couldn't pull it out as a behind the scenes person. And, for that, I decided I may as well post it to show other's how much of an impact a small act can do. I truly feel like making even the tiniest ripples make a big difference, and well, this was one of them!

It's not uncommon for me to leave credit at my favorite coffee shop for others to use when they stop to grab a coffee. I often pay for meals for others in drive throughs. These are just things I enjoy doing. No motivation behind it besides hoping to make someone else's day a little better. I know what it's like to struggle some days, and those small acts can make me smile. The humanity I've seen on the news hurts my soul, if I can make a difference, why not!?

So today, I went and met up with Kristen from K.Jensen Photography for coffee. I had this planned out for weeks though. She literally knew nothing and just thought we were going to chit chat, and that's exactly how I wanted it to go! We sat there and chatted for awhile about life, personal goals, growth, our businesses, aspirations and struggles. We were authentic with each other, raw and completely open books. I loved it, I felt so connected. Genuinely people, she really is a super great human.

And then I surprised her! I told her I had to grab a gift for her from my vehicle and wanted to film it. Of course, we both checked our hair quick (mine is crazy, I've just learned to embrace it!). I promised her it wasn’t anything bad and when I got back, we both got nervously filled with anticipation and excitement.

Well, the rest you’ve seen unfold and quickly realize how heartwarming it all felt.

Again, I literally didn’t film this or do this for myself. I choose to film it and share because I want others to see that doing good and being a good human is important. You have to surround yourself with the energy you want to receive. By giving to others, trusting and having faith in humanity, you’ll notice a change in your own spirit. Sometimes wearing my emotions on my sleeve does burn me, but nine times out of ten, situations like this make the risk of being vulnerable to others worth way more than playing it safe and staying within my own bubble.

I’ve built so many friendships in my photography community and I am forever grateful for these people. My tribe is always growing and building, and I’m completely ready to let more in. Sometimes owning a business makes you feel so alone and frustrated. I can’t count the numerous times I’ve wanted to quit. But then, a tiny word of encouragement or a simple thank you from a client warms my heart and reminds me why I do what I love. These are the people that impact your business, these are the friendships and mentors you’ll learn to lean on with questions who can help uplift you. Be vulnerable. Be willing to share the love.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!! XOXO - Kelsey with Dirt Road Photography

And I had a huge request for a link to the bags, so I’m linking up to the full sized Evermore that I gifted her! The two that I own are the mini and full sized Evermore’s and I can attest that they’re amazing quality! My next purchase (when it’s back in stock) will include the Warm Honey Evermore, or well, basically, the entire Warm Honey line-up of products! Look into the company, they’re moving mountains and give back so much. They fully fund an orphanage in Mexico too!

Fall Family Mini Session // Wilber, Nebraska // Southeast Nebraska Photographer

What a whirlwind of a day, but it was intentionally perfect. We invited twelve family’s out to the farm near Wilber, Nebraska for our annual fall family mini sessions and it everything went smooth with less than three tiny humans in tears. We quickly turned those tears into smiles with candy surprises at the end so no worries about casualties. ;) I was so worried we wouldn’t have nice weather since the week before we had snow falling but the day was amazing with sunshine, a slight breeze and 60 degree temps. With just the right amount of rich fall colored leaves but still touches of green in the grass.

The thing I love most about my fall family mini’s is getting to see and catch up with a lot of clients once a year. Every single year it’s crazy how much their kiddos have grown but I love establishing a friendship and building trust with the littles. This year, we had families from Milford, Crete, Hallam, Wilber, Clatonia, and even Beatrice area! It’s incredible to see how much of a distance everyone is willing to come to meet me!

It’s such an honor that parents invite me back into their lives and getting family pictures is something I always encourage everyone to do. Sometimes life gets cut short, and you struggle with the thought of not having a family picture to reminiscence over, let’s take those thoughts away and schedule some family memories of your own!!

Huge thank you again to all the families that visited us. You make me love small town Nebraska life so much more when I see all the amazing people involved in our communities! I cannot wait to watch all these kids become the future leaders and I know I’ve met so many amazing parents that are fantastic role models for them. ;)

Autumn Branson of Fairbury, Nebraska

Autumn Branson is a senior from Fairbury High School who is ambitious, always smiling, and full of determination. She came to me with ideas of wanting to do some pretty fun things during her senior session and my heart sang with joy knowing we’d nail all her epic plans. We wanted to include her precious little fluff ball of a puppy, that she shows in AKC dog shows, so of course that was an absolute must!! She also said she saw and fell in love with my water and river shots so that was top on our list to start with. And of course, we always have to include a barn or two and some dirt roads in the photos. ;)

The first thing we did for her senior session is put on our muck boots and ventured into the woods to go visit my hidden gem of a little natural spring and take some pretty pictures down there. She was a beautiful floral dress that fit the outdoor location perfectly! The dress was flowly and the colors were stunning with all of the fall leaves that were falling down around us. It was seriously magical, something I always love to stop and just enjoy the moment of when I’m taking photos of seniors during the busy fall season.

I like to get to know my seniors and one of the things Autumn mentioned was that she’s a wrestler for her local high school team. I found that to be pretty unique and special, I also thought it was a creative touch to bring her wrestling shoes and a trophy she had won as well. Another thing I always do is ask the senior what is one word that describes you, her answer was reserved. I totally see it, but I also think the word I’d use to describe her is aspiring. ;)

Thank you again Branson crew for visiting our farm near Dorchester, Nebraska. It’s been a joy working with you and I love the album you choose to order. I think it will look fantastic! I’m sending you the best of wishes in college and cannot wait to see how your future unfolds!

Shootproof - Gallery Hosting, Contracts and Invoicing

Shootproof // gallery hosting, contracts & invoicing // photographer review

Shootproof-Gallery-Hosting-Client-Contracts-Invoicing-Mobile-Apps-Review-Kelsey-Homolka-Nerud-Dirt-Road-Photography-Referral

Quite a few years ago when I was starting to step up my business game I started researching gallery hosting for clients. I needed a system that I could upload their images that would allow them to share with friends and also download their images if needed. I took my time to compare quite a few of the common ones but, eventually, I settled into Shootproof.

If you’re interested in Shootproof, use the link provided to try it out and get a free month of their services! Set up your account, look around and give them a try. I promise you won’t cancel after the trial is over and you’ll love them! Even the contracts/invoicing section alone keeps you organized and is worth the $10/month for their cheapest plan!

Gallery Hosting

At the time, Shootproof had some bare bone uses, which worked for what I wanted. They basically had options to hold my photos in galleries with the option to add passwords. The other thing I loved at the time was the option to link my galleries to some of my favorite print labs. That meant I could create an ordering site directly on there and not have to worry about manually entering print orders if I wanted. My out of town clients could go directly to their gallery, send it to grandparents and everyone could purchase the sizes and quantities they wanted. It literally was fantastic while I transitioned into the all inclusive business structure into the “in person sales” process where clients come in to sit down and view then order products. Another bonus is that you can go in and “favorite” certain photos to help narrow down and pick which ones you love the most. It’s great when trying to choose prints or select the digital files you want. I also love the feature of being able to send the favorite photos to clients via a digital download link. It’s a one click system that makes my life super easy for mini sessions.

Mobile Apps

With my business structure, I offer clients mobile apps to compliment the purchase of digital files. With the plan I have through Shootproof, I have an unlimited amount of mobile apps I can create so it’s another fantastic way to deliver images to clients to view and share with their friends and family while on the go. It’s a great add-on to my gallery hosting services that can include links directly to their entire gallery. The biggest difference between mobile apps and the online galleries is that you can’t favorite or purchase products. The mobile apps are mainly intended for viewing the photos. It’s fantastic for those situations where you don’t have service to access the internet as well. ;)

Contracts

This was a feature that was added quite awhile after I was already using Shootproof. And it was a lifesaver!! Again, my entire goal of my business is to streamline my workflow so I’m spending less time doing behind the scenes work and more time shooting or hanging out with my clients. With the contracts and invoicing features, this is getting easier. The contracts allow me to create templates of my own or they have some pretty cool ones you can actually purchase through them as well. You can go in and adjust details, link to specific clients as well as link to your invoices. Game. Changer. I cannot express enough how important contracts are to not only protect yourself but to protect your clients from any misunderstandings with what is expected from both of you.

Invoicing

This is the best feature they have added to do!!! Literally, I hated the days of waiting for clients to mail checks/cash or pay deposits. Sometimes I wouldn’t get them for weeks or they’d forget completely. I’d send a printed invoices along with their contract and it’d get lost in piles of mail at home and never be returned. Now, I can drop in pre-made session fees, print products that have my taxes/pricing memorized and it’s such a simple process!! The best part, you can LINK your invoicing with contracts to specific clients. Then, link that same client to their gallery, and it’s all inclusive to keep track of it all! Set up due dates for the invoices, add deposits or retainers and even split the invoice up into an auto pay system if the client wants to link their card to it. Literally, lifesaver.

Email Automations

Something that’s probably one of their newest features that I use the most is their email automation systems. I like using them because it helps kick reminders out without me having to keep track of where I’m at in my workflow with every single client. What you can do is set it up to kick out emails when it hits certain things. My series I have created include invoice deposit due, invoice due date, gallery released to visitors, gallery expiring soon, and invoice overdue. Although I have several others that are similar, I like to keep it simple and not completely spam all of my clients. These help to remind them of specific things that are coming up for their sessions. Now, I can say that almost 90% of my invoices are paid on time and I don’t have to worry about not having people place orders from their galleries because they get reminders about them.

Gallery Archive

Ok last one, I swear this time! This. This was genius. I’m super weird about getting rid of client files, so I guess, I’m basically a geeky version of a hoarder. I still have every single photo ever taken in my possession ever since I started my business. It’s ridiculous holding five years worth of raw files, edits and marketing I know. But I just can’t get rid of it! So, I love that Shootproof let’s me do the same! While you’re limited on the plans with how many images you can put into your galleries, it doesn’t count against you if you archive the photos! Which means, you get charged like one cent for every gigabyte of space. To be exact, here’s what my account says: “Archived 24 GB of data at a rate of $0.04 per GB.” ….you guys, I’m paying FOUR CENTS to hold years worth of client galleries. Fine. Take my money Shootproof! Those pennies are worth it to know if something were to happen to my hard drive (or my back up hard drive, or the back up to my back up hard drive down at the bank in my safety deposit box) or if a client were to lose their home to a fire or tornado or flooding damage, I still have their photos. That piece of mind means so much to me for less than a dollar a month. We’ll touch base later about how to store client files, but this is another way I keep myself accountable and backed up for my clients. So worth it.

So. There’s a (long) but quick summary of my favorite perks of using Shootproof. Seriously, finding Shootproof was one of the best things I’ve done and hands down the cheapest investment I’ve made in my own business. It’s streamlined my business and I love that it gives clients their own little space to view images and order if they want.

*Some of the links for Shootproof do include referral links which means I receive a tiny portion of credit for those who sign up using the links provided.

Transformation Photoshop Editing // Noah Beck // Wilber-Clatonia High School // Dorchester Nebraska Photographer

NEBRASKA PHOTOGRAPHER | Photoshop Editing Comparison | High School Senior PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION | Clatonia, NEBRASKA

images-of-high-school-senior-boy-noah-jacobsen-from-wilber-clatonia-high-school-class-of-2019-clatonia-nebraska-photos-dirt-road-photography-southeast-nebraska-saline-county-kelsey-homolka-nerud-rural-farm-dorchester-cow-brown-calf-wrangler-cowboy-farmer-baseball-cap-blue-shirt-boots-graduation-yearbook-pictures

Every once in awhile, I like to share a behind the scenes look at the editing process so clients can see truly how much magic goes into the edit of your images. It’s not a drag and drop quick change and sometimes I can put hours into editing a session. I just hope others enjoy the images as much as I do capturing them and processing to create the magic I first see when I’m taking them!

So. To break down a little more what I all did while editing this picture (cause hey, I know some photographers are on here and want to learn too!). I first always cull my images in Adobe Bridge software. I star rate my top favs and what I plan to edit. Then as I edit, I change the star rating so I can see progress and know what I have left. After sorting, I pull into Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and start working in there. Lighting, I adjusted the exposure, upped the contrast slightly, pulled the highlights down a little, lighted up the shadows, bumped the clarity a tad bit. I also did a slight bit of sharpening (I typically sharpen in Photoshop instead of in ACR). That’s the basics of my edit. From there I pull into Photoshop and will run a few actions as needed depending on what I want the final outcome to look like.

There it is. There’s my workflow on an image! Sometimes I will batch edit the ACR files because I shoot with the same settings and then will tweak individual’s as needed but I try to keep my workflow consist and quick paced. These are the basic editing that happens to all files clients see. Since I do IPS (in person sales) with my clients, I do 90% editing before they view images and then smooth skin, remove minor blemishes and liquify as needed once we choose which images you want to purchase. That saves me the extra time working on details that aren’t necessary.

I hope this is helpful. And, as always, if you have questions drop them in the comments or email me! I have been tossing around the idea of a few business geared mentoring or workshops and would love to know if people would be interested in that. I feel there are so many fantastic other photographers out there that can offer posing or editing but I don’t see a ton of things about running your business so this is something that’s really important to me.

High School Senior Session - Nebraska Photographer

Home girl Bre Zoubek of Wilber, Nebraska is killing it when it came to repping the Class of 2019! We had so much fun celebrating her senior year of high school at Wilber-Clatonia High School through her senior pictures. From the beautiful sunsets to the buggy stream pictures, we took so many gorgeous images and I cannot wait to share more! Also, HUGE thank you for participating in our Senior Model Rep Team, you literally are amazing girlfriend! We’ve got so many different images to share that we’ll be slowly releasing more images throughout the rest of the year.

I was over the moon excited when I got a call from the Wittenhagen family letting me know that Chase wanted to book his senior session with me. But once the excitement wore off, I realized it was such a bittersweet feeling for me to see the final kiddo graduating high school. I’ve know the Wittenhagen crew for going on almost five years now and they’ve been there the first few years I was growing and learning as a business. I remember when Chase’s brother Layne was a senior and their first visit out to the farm we chatted about his future plans. Then, a short year later, his sister, Haeley came out. We also chatted about future plans, and even included siblings and grandma in some photos as well that year. Then, a year passed, I kept track of the family through social media, and I missed seeing them. Hearing updates and thrills on new kiddos accomplishments. It’s been such a fun time working with them.

I think what I love most about photographing high school seniors is getting to talk with them. Learn about their future plans and goals. Talk about all of their accomplishments throughout school and what they’re doing to make the most of time during their senior year. Laugh about the funny memories with friends or even jokes they’ve played. I love getting to compare each school system and what rules they have. Sometimes I find myself amazed with certain things they can get away with now (cough, phones in class).

Chase is attending Pius X High School located in Lincoln, Nebraska and is part of the Class of 2019. I love that he isn’t afraid to be spontaneous and go trekking to go find new locations that are unique for his session out on the farm. We tried our best to go to different spots than his siblings so everything would be new. While talking to Chase, I learned he plans on going on after school to join the Navy. And I am so proud of him for that.

It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know Chase and his family and I wish him nothing but the best in life after high school. Thank you so much for choosing me to be your senior photographer! I hope your family enjoys the pictures as much as I do! Thanks again!

Hayden’s laughter is contagious! He invited me to his farm near Clatonia, Nebraska and I couldn’t turn it down. Here is southeast Nebraska, anytime someone offers me a fresh farm to shoot at, I allllways agree and get excited! So we walked around his grandparents farm, looking at the barns, bins and cattle pens. We checked the beans and even climbed around hay bales. Then, he took me to this magical field where there were fresh alfalfa bales waiting for us. The sun fell perfectly and the perfect mist settled into the air. We got lots of giggles as we sat around the bales and brought out his trap shooting metals. It was seriously, so much fun!

Conner has made me laugh and is such a fantastic kid who goes to Wilber-Clatonia High School and is active in so many activities. From Cross Country to Swing Choir, he’s constantly busy and I totally admire how much effort he puts into the community. At his senior session we got busy having fun on the farm, practically going “mudding” getting to a location for some fishing pictures and even pulling his four wheeler out! There’s nothing more exciting than hanging out with kiddos and learning what their future plans are. I have no doubt Conner will do magical things in the future, he is such a great leader!
